UCLA Faculty on Tour

Professor Kevin McKeegan
Dept. of Earth, Planetary, and Space Sciences divider

Kevin McKeegan is Distinguished Professor and former Chair of UCLA’s Dept. of Earth, Planetary, and Space Sciences. He is an expert in the laboratory analysis of extraterrestrial materials and is one of only a handful of people who have had the privilege to hold samples of asteroids and comets, the Earth and Mars, and the Moon and even the Sun. Particles of the solar wind were captured by NASA’s Genesis mission and returned to Earth for analysis in McKeegan’s UCLA laboratory. The solar wind is also responsible for generating the Aurora Borealis which McKeegan fondly recalls witnessing on two occasions while in college in northern New York. Now, after 40+ years and having analyzed actual samples of the solar wind, he is very excited to complete the circle and marvel once again at the beautiful Northern Lights. He can think of no better place to see this spectacle than a glass-domed cabin in Lapland and he looks forward to sharing this adventure with fellow Bruins!
