UCLA Faculty on Tour

Professor Efrain Kristal
Department of Comparative Literature divider

Efrain Kristal is a Distinguished Professor in UCLA’s Department of Comparative Literature, which he chaired for ten years until June 2021. He works on topics in Spanish, French, German and Italian, and in the philosophy of art. He is the author of over one hundred scholarly articles and several books. He received his Ph.D. from Stanford University, and spent the 2019-2020 academic year as a Fellow of the Institute of Advanced Study in Berlin. He has just finished a book on the Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges and the two world wars, and is currently working on a book on the Philosopher Peter Sloterdijk who taught at the University of Vienna. Kristal has given lectures in person around the world. As the pandemic was starting he lectured in Sweden and Romania, and moved his engagements in London and Bulgaria to Zoom. For his notable efforts, Efrain was awarded the UCLA Distinguished Teaching Award, and was invited to deliver the distinguished UCLA Faculty Research Lecture.
