Be captivated by Spain and Portugal’s best-kept secrets, the Extremadura and Alentejo regions, on this 10-night, small-group adventure! Begin in Madrid to admire the Prado’s exceptional art, then set off to see Segovia’s fairy-tale Alcázar and majestic Roman aqueduct. Stroll through magnificent Toledo, graced with the heritage of three cultures. Next, head to ruggedly beautiful Extremadura, birthplace of many well-known New World conquistadors. While staying in medieval, walled Trujillo, explore the preserved old town and choose a themed walk showcasing its cuisine, religious history or medieval period. Nearby, roam old Cáceres’ atmospheric streets, discover Guadalupe’s exquisite monastery and marvel at Mérida’s wonderfully preserved Roman theater. Efrain Kristal
Department of Comparative Literature divider

Efrain Kristal is a Distinguished Professor and Chair of UCLA’s Department of Comparative Literature. He works on topics in Spanish, French, German and Italian, and in the philosophy of art. He is the author of over one hundred scholarly articles and several books. He received his Ph.D. from Stanford University, was a Fellow of the Centre of Philosophy, Literature and the Arts at the University of Warwick, and he spent the 2019-2020 academic year as a Fellow of the Institute of Advanced Study in Berlin. He is currently writing a book on the Philosopher Peter Sloterdijk who taught at the University of Vienna, and has recently lectured in Sweden, Romania and Bulgaria. For his notable efforts, Efrain was awarded the UCLA Distinguished Teaching Award, and was invited to deliver the distinguished UCLA Faculty Research Lecture.
