UCLA Faculty on Tour

Sharon Gerstel
Department of Art History divider

Sharon Gerstel is Director of the UCLA Stavros Niarchos Foundation Center for the Study of Hellenic Culture and a specialist in Byzantine Art and Archaeology. Her most recent book focuses on village life in 13th-15th century Greece, combining approaches from art history, history, anthropology and archaeology to recover the voices and vistas of a largely invisible population. Gerstel has worked for three decades in the Peloponnese, focusing on the site of Mystras and villages in the Mani peninsula, where she is helping restore a village church of 1075. Her research focuses on art and ritual, but also on the subject of church acoustics and performance. She regularly teaches courses on Byzantine art and archaeology, moving from the foundations of the empire in Constantinople to the everyday lives of those whose taxes paid for the capital’s great building projects.
