UCLA Faculty on Tour

Professor Sharon Gerstel
Department of Art History divider

Sharon Gerstel is Director of the UCLA Stavros Niarchos Foundation Center for the Study of Hellenic Culture and a specialist in Byzantine Art and Archaeology. Her most recent book focuses on village life in 13th-15th century Greece, combining approaches from art history, history, anthropology and archaeology to recover the voices and vistas of a largely invisible population. Gerstel regularly teaches courses on early medieval art and has a passion for the art and architecture of Ireland. For years she has traveled through Ireland, photographing its early medieval monasteries, particularly the churches and communities that mark the western islands. Her interest in island communities has led her to the study of local writers, including Tomás Ó Criomhthain, Peig Sayers and Muiris Ó Súilleabháin, but she is also well-versed in Ireland’s role in popular culture, particularly as a screening site for The Game of Thrones and The Force Awakens.
