FERPA & Third Party Access
Once a student turns 18 or begins college, federal privacy law limits what UCLA can share with their family. To see your student’s grades, billing, or financial aid, your student grants you Third Party Access through MyUCLA. This page explains the law and walks through how to set up access.

What FERPA means for families
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) protects student education records. When your student was in high school, you could access their records with relative ease. Once a student turns 18 or enrolls in college, the University cannot release information about them to anyone, including parents and family members, without the student’s written consent.
FERPA covers grades, disciplinary proceedings, billing, and financial aid. You have an interest in your student’s progress, but you are not automatically granted access to their records. We encourage you to build a relationship with your student based on trust, so they feel comfortable sharing their college life with you.
For the full policies, see the U.S. Department of Education, the UC system FERPA policy, and UCLA’s FERPA policy.
What Third Party Access lets you see
Third Party Access lets a student grant another person, usually a parent, access to specific parts of their record. Students grant access function by function, so they choose exactly what you can see. Available functions include:
- Study List
- Degree Progress Report
- Grades & GPA
- Registration Status
- Holds
- Billing and Receivables (BAR) account
- Financial Aid
- Address
Students can also choose to have their third party receive billing emails. Access is view-only for records, with direct access to the BAR account so you can pay fees online. Before creating Third Party Access, your student must confirm they have read and understand FERPA restrictions.
How to set up access
Setting up access takes two steps, one for you and one for your student.
- You create a UCLA Logon account. Set up and manage your UCLA Logon ID and password at accounts.iam.ucla.edu. You can reset passwords and add security questions here.
- Your student grants you access in MyUCLA. Your student logs in to MyUCLA, then adds you using your UCLA Logon ID and your first and last name. UCLA validates the match to confirm the correct person receives access.
Once access is granted, you log in to MyUCLA the same way a student would and see only the functions your student has shared. If your student needs help granting access, point them to the MyUCLA Tutorial: Third Party Access.
